Dryer Not Heating? Common Causes

When the drum keeps turning but clothes come out cold, the cause is almost always a single failed component — and it's worth checking the vent before anything else.

A dryer that tumbles normally but leaves clothes damp or cold is a specific, well-understood problem. The heating side of the machine is separate from the motor that turns the drum, so a failure in one doesn't affect the other — which is exactly why this happens. Here's what to check, starting with the cause that's both the most common and the easiest to rule out.

Check the vent before anything else

A restricted dryer vent is the leading cause of home dryer fires — roughly 2,900 per year in the U.S. If drying times have crept up over the past several months, your vent is likely partially blocked even if the dryer still produces some heat. Clean it out before troubleshooting further, both for safety and because a blocked vent is often the root cause behind other failures on this list.

The most common causes, in order of likelihood

1A blown thermal fuse

The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that permanently cuts power to the heating circuit if the dryer overheats — almost always because of a clogged vent restricting airflow. Once it blows, it doesn't reset itself; it has to be replaced. Here's the important part: if you only replace the fuse without also clearing the vent, it will simply blow again. Fix both together.

2A worn heating element (electric dryers)

Unlike the thermal fuse, the heating element can fail from ordinary age and thermal cycling, independent of the vent's condition — though a restricted vent does shorten its lifespan. On many dryers, replacing the element means removing the rear panel, which involves careful disassembly of the heat duct, so it's usually a job for a technician.

3A failed igniter or gas valve solenoid (gas dryers)

On gas models, the igniter is a glow-bar element that lights the burner at the start of each heat cycle. If it fails, the dryer runs but the burner never lights — you may notice the igniter glowing without any flame appearing, which points specifically to the valve solenoids rather than the igniter itself. Gas components should always be diagnosed and repaired by a qualified technician.

4One leg of a tripped 240-volt breaker (electric dryers)

Electric dryers run on 240 volts, split across two "legs" of power. If only one leg trips, the motor still gets enough power to run and tumble normally, but the heating element — which needs the full 240 volts — gets nothing. This is genuinely easy to check yourself: look at your breaker panel for a double-pole breaker that's partially tripped or feels loose.

5A failed cycling thermostat or control board

The cycling thermostat regulates the heating range during a cycle; a control board manages the timing signal that tells the heating circuit when to activate. Either one failing can cut heat entirely even though every other component is fine. These require multimeter testing to confirm before replacement.
