A washer that finishes its cycle with water still sitting in the tub is one of the most common calls we get — and one of the most fixable. The drain sequence depends on a pump, a filter, a hose, and a safety switch all working together, and when any one of those falls out of sync, the water stays right where it is. Here are the causes in the order we see them most often.
Rule out your plumbing first
Occasionally the washer is fine and the blockage is in your home's standpipe or drain line. If a sink near the washer also drains slowly, the problem may not be the machine at all — worth checking before you assume the washer itself has failed.
The most common causes, in order of likelihood
1A clogged pump filter
On most front-load washers, this is the cause by far the most often. Coins, hair ties, small socks, and general lint collect in the filter over time and restrict water flow. It's usually behind a small access panel at the bottom-front of the machine — place a towel underneath, twist the filter cap counterclockwise, and pull it out to clear it. This is a genuinely easy DIY fix that costs nothing but a few minutes. Top-load washers typically don't have a user-accessible filter, since the pump sits further inside the machine.
2A kinked or blocked drain hose
The hose running from the back of the washer to the wall drain or standpipe can bend or get pinched, especially if the washer has been pushed back against the wall. Lint and soap residue can also build up inside it over time. Pull the washer out, check the hose runs freely with no sharp bends, and confirm it isn't pushed too far down the standpipe — an overly deep hose can actually siphon water back rather than draining it properly.
3A faulty lid switch or door latch
Modern washers won't start or continue the drain cycle unless the lid switch (top-load) or door latch (front-load) registers as closed — it's a safety mechanism. A worn or misaligned switch can trick the machine into thinking the door is still open, stopping the cycle mid-drain even though everything else is working fine. This one isn't a safe DIY fix, since it involves the machine's electrical safety interlock.
4A failed drain pump
If the filter is clean and the hose is clear, the pump itself may have failed. Sometimes you'll hear it humming or buzzing as it tries and fails to move water; other times it's gone completely silent, which usually means the motor has burned out. Replacing a drain pump requires disassembly and electrical work, so it's not typically a DIY repair.
5A control board issue
Less common, but on newer washers with electronic controls, the board manages the timing signal that tells the pump when to run. If the board itself is malfunctioning, the pump may never get the signal to activate at all, even though it's mechanically fine. This requires proper diagnostic testing to confirm before any part gets replaced.

- Unplug the washer first. Never work around water and electrical connections with the machine still powered.
- Place towels down. Whether you're accessing a front-load filter or lowering a top-load drain hose, water will come out by gravity — have towels or a shallow pan ready.
- Don't force a stuck filter cap. If it won't turn, stop rather than risk cracking the housing — this is a sign it's time to call for help.
