A refrigerator that's stopped cooling is one of the more stressful appliance problems, mostly because of the clock — food starts warming up the moment it happens. The good news is that most causes fall into a short, predictable list, and a few of them you can check yourself in under ten minutes before deciding whether to call a technician.
First, listen for the compressor
Put your ear near the back-bottom of the fridge. If you hear a low hum, the compressor is running and the problem is likely airflow or a fan. If you hear nothing — or just an occasional click — the issue is more likely electrical, and that changes where to look first.
The most common causes, in order of likelihood
1Dirty condenser coils
The condenser coils, usually at the back or underneath the fridge, dissipate heat pulled out of the cabinet. When they're coated in dust and pet hair, the whole system has to work harder to shed that heat, and cooling suffers. This is the single most common cause and also the easiest to fix — unplug the fridge, pull it out, and vacuum the coils with a brush attachment. Manufacturers generally recommend doing this every 6 to 12 months.
2A failed evaporator fan
This fan, tucked inside the freezer compartment, circulates cold air into the refrigerator side. When it fails, you'll often notice the freezer still gets cold while the fridge stays warm — a telltale pattern. A failing evaporator fan sometimes squeals or chirps before it quits entirely.
3A weak or failed condenser fan
This fan draws air over the condenser coils to help release heat. If it's stuck or the motor has failed, heat can't escape efficiently, and in some cases the compressor will overheat and shut itself down as a protective measure.
4A bad start relay or capacitor
The start relay gives the compressor the jolt it needs to kick on. If it's failing, you'll often hear repeated clicking as the compressor attempts to start and fails. Don't let it keep cycling — repeated failed starts can damage the compressor windings themselves, turning an inexpensive relay repair into an expensive compressor replacement.
5Frost-blocked evaporator coils
If the automatic defrost system has failed, frost builds up on the evaporator coils until it blocks airflow entirely. This usually points to a bad defrost heater, thermistor, or defrost timer, and it's a repair that needs a proper diagnosis rather than guesswork.
6A refrigerant leak in the sealed system
The compressor, condenser, evaporator, and connecting tubing make up the sealed system. A leak here is the least common cause but the most involved to fix — it requires brazing the leak and recharging the refrigerant, work that's regulated by the EPA and needs a certified technician. On older units, replacement is often more practical than this repair.

- Check the door seal. Close the door on a piece of paper — if it slides out easily, the gasket isn't sealing and warm air is getting in.
- Confirm the thermostat setting. It sounds obvious, but a bumped dial or an accidentally changed digital setting is a genuinely common cause.
- Check the outlet. A tripped breaker or a loose plug can look identical to a bigger mechanical failure from the outside.
- Give it time after a power outage. A fridge can take several hours to return to temperature after being unplugged or losing power.
When it's worth calling a technician
If you've cleaned the coils, checked the seal, and confirmed the settings but the fridge still isn't cooling, the cause is likely internal — an evaporator fan, condenser fan, start relay, defrost system, or sealed system issue. These aren't safe or practical DIY repairs for most people, and a compressor that's clicking repeatedly should be unplugged rather than left to keep trying and failing. A proper diagnosis with a multimeter and, where needed, refrigerant gauges will tell you exactly what's wrong before any parts are replaced.
